One of the biggest problems with being poor, is not having enough food. Whether it be before going to play sport or coming to school. In Lower Hutt some low decile schools get free fruit and milk in school. This alleviates the problem.
I also found out that some poor families try to reuse some unused toys or clothing, so they hand it over to the Salvation Army to give it a new home. This isn't done by some rich families in Petone, where it just gets thrown in the tip, because they can just by a new one! That is where I found this BMX bike just lying next the bin waiting for them to come pick it up and throw it away, but they never did.
It is sad to think and remember, that I took this photo. I just saw him lying there, on a bench, in Wellington. I had to get a photo of him to prove that this problem is local.
